Heard Around My House, and a Mush-yoom Update

Update on the mushroom festival we've been having in our yard: This thing is huge! I haven't cut the grass because I didn't want to shred this cool fungus, and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. Looks like a soccerball sitting in the yard. It's over 8 inches across, and probably the same in height.

The underside feels like flesh, and the top has a feathery look and feel. I don't have a clue what type it is or if it's edible. I just think it's amazing. Most of the fungus is underground, as mycelium, and every so often they fruit, especially after a wet spell. We've had some good rains recently, and under a lot of the older shade trees the mushies are popping up.

Heard around my house:
  • I want to go poop! (exit 3YO with pants around her knees)
  • Do you want to watch the Jane Austen Book Club with me? (Ummm...not so much.)
  • It's called a Nano. It's one gigabyte. (Do you know what a gigabyte is?)
  • Mine's gonna be purple.
  • What can I have to eat? (What do you want to eat?)
  • I don't know. What can I have? (You're 10. You know what we eat and what we buy. What do you want?)

  • It will probably hold a hundred songs. (Cool. Do you have that much music?)
  • I want some thing like....mumble..mumble... (Say that again?)
  • Well, there's iTunes. (There's your allowance.)
  • Wipe me! (I'm coming, hang on!)
  • Something like, you know, a treat. (Have some food, not a treat.)
  • Where poop go? Into floor? (It goes into a pipe under the street with our neighbor's poop.)
  • We should make cookies, Pop. (We had ice cream and cookies last night. Maybe another time.)
  • Can I go online? Just for a minute? (Umm... No.)
  • We're going to the library for movies. Bye! (Bye. I'll be in the Man Cave.)
In other related news, Eat the View is petitioning for a garden on the White House lawn.

From the site:
"Eat the View" is a campaign to plant healthy, edible landscapes in high-impact, high visibility places, whether it's the "First Lawn" or the lawn in front of your child's school.
Eat the View is a project of Kitchen Gardeners International.

I joined up. Food and gardens are important, and this is an big hairy audacious goal. I like that.
